Deborah L. Birx, the current Coronavirus Response Coordinator under the White House Coronavirus Task Force, has contradicted the president on the response needed for Covid-19. Whereas the president insists that the United States is “rounding the corner”, Dr. Birx stated that the country is not far from seeing an increase in Covid-19 cases this coming winter.[1]
Dr. Birx stressed that the possible surge in Covid-19 cases made it necessary for a more aggressive approach than has been taken so far. Dr. Birx, in an internal memorandum sent to officials at the White House, suggested that the administration has been focusing on locking down rather than on controlling the coronavirus.[2] Dr. Birx stated in the memo, “This is not about lockdowns — It hasn’t been about lockdowns since March or April. It’s about an aggressive balanced approach that is not being implemented.”
The memo written by Dr. Birx warns that the number of new cases per day may even exceed 100,000. This number is staggering considering that there are now 9 million confirmed cases in the country, with more deaths than in any other country. The administration may find it helpful to start listening to its advisers now more than ever. Right now, it seems the Trump administration is more focused on making Covid-19 a rallying point for the campaign rather than making strides in controlling the virus. Dr. Birx’s report certainly gives a subtle slap in the face to the administration for failing to place more resources in stagnating the virus. Even the most diehard Republican must acknowledge somewhere in their mind that the administration has at instances been negligent.
