On Friday, the Riverside County Sheriff, Chad Bianco, stated that he will not be “blackmailed, bullied, or used as muscle” against his county’s residents by Governor Gavin Newsom.
Bianco criticized Newsom’s style of dictator politics against the people of California while the governor himself dined at a luxury restaurant and sent his own children to in-person private school. The sheriff stated that Newsom’s manner of handing out lockdown orders is “very telling about his attitude toward California residents, his feelings about the virus, and it is extremely hypocritical.”
Furthermore, Bianco called the state’s statistics to justify the new lockdown as “flat-out ridiculous.” Bianco said they “are not representative of true numbers and are disastrous for Riverside County.”
Bianco’s stance towards the governor’s orders comes a day before the California Department of Public Health announced on Saturday the number of beds in the ICU were almost at full capacity. The state, therefore, has ordered new lockdown restrictions on Sunday to combat COVID-19, including closing all restaurant dine-ins.
Bianco insinuated that the governor’s threat is “part of the new goal to shift attention away from his and others’ personal behavior with a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ attitude by turning public opinion against California sheriffs.”
Sheriff Bianco then appealed to Riverside residents to use their common sense and behave responsibly in the struggle to combat the coronavirus.
